As Threatened, Trump Holds Up Passage of Long-Awaited Bipartisan Housing Bill, Demanding the Senate Pass the Restrictive SAVE America Act

In our June 19th report we told you about President Donald Trump’s threat to not sign the bipartisan housing or FISA homeland security bills unless the Senate passed the SAVE America Act. The Senate passed the housing bill – without the SAVE Act attached – and its signing ceremony was abruptly cancelled.

The “21st Century ROAD to Housing Act” passed 85 to 5 in the U.S. Senate June 22nd, and it contains 45 provisions intended to increase the stock of existing and new homes in the hopes of lowering home prices nationwide.  It’s the most sweeping housing bill in decades.

On social media June 16th Trump demanded, “THE SAVE AMERICA ACT MUST BE PASSED, NOW.  Use the housing and FISA Bills to get it done!” UNQUOTE. But Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters, “The votes currently aren’t there.”

The SAVE America Act is strongly opposed by pro-democracy groups for its restrictions on documentary proof of citizenship, narrow voter ID options and mail-in voting.  It could disenfranchise millions of Americans who don’t have ready-access to their birth certificates, and create barriers for married women and others whose birth certificates don’t match their married or current name.

The President has 10 days to sign or veto the bill, or let the bill become law without a signature.
