President Donald Trump attempted to resurrect the SAVE America Act, stalled in the U.S. Senate, by tying it to the passage of the national security FISA Act, and bills on housing. It’s still not likely to have enough votes to pass.
June 14th, Trump posted on social media, QUOTE, “I’m against FISA if it doesn’t come with The Save America Act (Full version!) firmly attached to it.”
The SAVE America Act failed to reach the 60-vote filibuster threshold in March, even after the President tied it to passage of a bill funding ICE and TSA. It was later stripped from the bill. June 9th, the Senate voted NOT to add the SAVE Act into the budget reconciliation bill. Now, it’s the bipartisan extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, which allows surveillance of communications of non-U.S. persons, and upcoming bipartisan housing bills. It’s still unlikely to overcome the filibuster.
The SAVE America Act would supercede state election law. It would require only narrow forms of voter ID, allow excuse-only absentee voting, and require documentary proof of citizenship for federal elections. About one-third of Americans voted by mail in 2024, and an estimated 9% of Americans don’t have ready access to birth certificates or passports. Millions of Americans could be disenfranchised.
