The passage of the SAVE America Act appears to be nearing a merciful end in the U.S. House and Senate. Both have now rebuffed the President’s demand to attach the restrictive voting bill to critical bipartisan housing, national security and defense appropriations bills.
The SAVE America Act has been stalled in the U.S. Senate for months, unable to reach the 60-vote threshold to end a filibuster. Last month, President Trump threatened to not support key bipartisan legislation if the SAVE Act was not passed as an amendment or a stand-alone bill. The bipartisan housing bill was passed without it, and June 15th, Senate Majority Leader John Thune advanced the expiring Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act without the SAVE Act attached.
With passage in the Senate in doubt, The Hill reported in June that House Speaker Mike Johnson would use a rules maneuver to repackage the SAVE America Act with the National Defense Authorization Act AFTER the defense bill was passed, then send it again to the Senate. June 30th, the rules maneuver was voted down, with 14 Republicans joining Democrats, 198-224.
In the unlikely event the bill survives, it would create chaos for both voters and the local election workers trying to implement the proof of citizenship, mail-in voting and voter ID restrictions in the remaining weeks before the midterms.
