October 14, 2026 1:00 pmATLANTA, GA, — There’s more dysfunction at the Georgia Elections Board. In 2024, election deniers on the board threatened to make “reasonable inquiries” and delay certification of the presidential election. Now, in a dispute over the state’s voting machines, the board’s executive director asked the Trump Department of Justice to “intervene.”
A touch screen voting system used in the state prints out a QR code to aid in the counting process, but critics say such systems aren’t transparent. A 2024 state law required the $107 million dollar system to be replaced by July 2026, but the legislature did not act.
The Elections Board authorized Executive Director James Mills to draft a letter to the DOJ about the machines. Two board members say they never saw the draft, and that it exceeded the board’s instructions. It requested DOJ’s, QUOTE, “…Review and, where appropriate, investigation and intervention concerning Georgia’s voting system.” The letter also accused Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger of misleading the public about the timeline and costs of replacing the QR code system, and illegally sharing voter data.
So far, DOJ has not acted, but five Georgia members of Congress said the letter undermined public confidence in Georgia’s election results. Other critics say it could be a pretext for election interference by Trump’s DOJ.
We’ve posted the letter to DOJ at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org. I’m Brian Beihl.
