September 22, 2026 10:07 amJEFFERSON CITY, MO — The fight over what Missouri congressional map will be used for the November election is apparently not over. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals made a decision opposite from the U.S. Supreme Court September 21st, and sets up a third high court case on the maps. Absentee ballots are already printed.
Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins attempted to derail a citizen ballot initiative rolling back a gerrymandered 2025 map. That map erased a largely Black and Democratic Kansas City district to gain a GOP congressional seat. But the state supreme court allowed the ballot initiative and restored the 2022 maps even though the gerrymandered 2025 maps were used in the primary.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh rejected the state’s appeal, leaving the 2022 maps in place. Congressman Bob Onder and three others sued again, arguing the 2022 maps could not constitutionally be used, and the 2025 maps must be restored. A district court agreed, but the U.S. Supreme Court stayed the order.
Absentee ballots have already been printed using the 2022 map, and are to be sent out September 22nd. But a three-judge Eighth Circuit panel ordered September 21st that the 2025 map should be used. Ballot initiative organizer People Not Politicians Missouri says it will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
