The U.S. Election Assistance Commission reports over 772,000 poll workers served during the 2024 general election, but shortages were common. National Poll Worker Recruitment Day is Aug. 11th, and supporting our election system is an excellent way to celebrate America’s 250 years of democracy.
Municipalities report that an aging workforce and the political climate contributed to the shortages, and the EAC reports that 48% of jurisdictions reported having a very or somewhat difficult time recruiting poll workers in their communities. Many older poll workers stepped away during the pandemic.
Election security doesn’t just happen by passing restrictive laws. Elections are secured by city or county officials and members of the community. Poll worker duties can be “outside the rail”, meaning directing voters, verifying identity, and registering new voters, or “inside the rail” monitoring the election process, assisting voters, tabulating ballots, and running reports.
Typically, poll workers must be 18, registered voters, and live in their community. Training is usually conducted by county or state officials in August or September in preparation for the general election. Recently, efforts have been made to recruit college students and veterans to alleviate shortages, and depending on your community, poll workers sometimes receive a stipend.
