The American Democracy Minute Radio News Report & Podcast for June 12, 2026

Florida’s Supreme Court denied an emergency request by a pro-voter group June 10th to pause Governor Ron DeSantis’ congressional redistricting map. The gerrymandered map, likely flipping four liberal-leaning districts conservative, will now likely be in place for the midterm election.
Governor Ron DeSantis pushed the map as part of President Donald Trump’s request for more GOP U.S. House seats. The bill passed both houses of the GOP-dominated Florida legislature in 48 hours with little debate. DeSantis signed it May 4th.
In 2010, voters passed the Florida Fair Maps Amendment with 63% of the vote. It sets criteria for fair maps and forbids drawing districts to favor a party or candidate. However, its provisions have been routinely ignored by the GOP legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis, and it has not been enforced by the DeSantis appointees on the Florida Supreme Court.
The June 10th decision didn’t address the Fair Maps Amendment directly. Instead, it used technical grounds to deny the appeal for a stay. The brief 122-word opinion stated the supreme court did not have jurisdiction yet because the district court was still considering the case. The only non DeSantis-appointed justice dissented, arguing the lower court’s delay was unjustified, and chided his fellow justices choosing not to take action before the midterm.
We have the decision and more on the map at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org. I’m Brian Beihl.
