As a listener to ADM, you know that redistricting voting districts happens every 10 years after a new census. That redistricting can be fairly done, or can be manipulated for partisan gain, called gerrymandering. But mathematicians and computer scientists now have tools to show to courts just how gerrymandered the districts actually are.

Here’s a fascinating case from North Carolina that you’ll hear more about in the mainstream press in the next few days. The North Carolina Supreme Court has conditionally ruled that because the state’s legislature was elected with gerrymandered voting maps, state constitutional amendments enacted in 2018 may be invalid.

Over the 18 months, Arizona GOP legislators passed two restrictive voting bills, one targeted at Native Americans, requiring proof of citizenship to vote by already registered voters. The other is a vague bill tightening vote-by-mail rules. Last week, Arizona hit the trifecta: The state was sued by the U.S. Justice Department, voting rights groups and the Democratic party all in one day.

Last year, the Wisconsin legislature, all hyped up on election fraud conspiracies, hired a retired Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, Michael Gableman, to conduct a review of the 2020 election results. Fourteen months and a million dollars with no fraud to show for it, Gableman’s contract was terminated last week.
