The American Democracy Minute Radio News Report & Podcast for July 17, 2026

Well before President Trump’s July 16th expected rehash of 2020 election conspiracies, pro-democracy groups and election officials were already planning for possible midterm meddling, mail delivery delays, threats and intimidation.
In May, pro-democracy groups Protect Democracy and the Brennan Center for Justice issued an election officials’ guide to possible federal election interference. It outlined these five scenarios and steps to combat them: The president claims authority to control election infrastructure or procedures through an Executive Order; The DOJ demands voters’ confidential personal data from state voter files; Military personnel or federal law enforcement agents are deployed to conduct checkpoints around polling locations; Federal law enforcement agents attempt to seize ballots and/or election equipment during an active election. And federal officials urge citizen groups to patrol ballot drop boxes and polling places in order to prevent so-called “illegal” voting.
It appears that the courts have stopped, for now, Trump’s executive order directing the U.S. Postal Service to check citizenship eligibility for mail-in voters. But Votebeat reported that local election officials still worry about on-time DELIVERY of ballots and uncertainty of postmarks, in addition to polling place threats, intimidation, poll watchers, and stricter ID and citizenship rules.
