Only days before the November 4th elections in California and New Jersey, the U.S. Justice Department announced DOJ personnel would be sent to select counties to monitor for “transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.” State officials raised concerns of voter intimidation, though Democratic turnout overwhelmed any attempt at suppression.
New Jersey experienced the most disruption, with bomb threats in Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Passaic counties. One juvenile was arrested in North Brunswick. In 2024, similar threats were traced to a Russian domain. In some cases, voting was relocated, delayed, or had extended hours.
In New York, three polling locations experienced a “swatting” hoax, claiming a terrorist attack. No polls were closed or moved.
In California, where the Proposition 50 suspension of the state’s independent redistricting commission was on the ballot, state officials suspected the Trump DOJ might try to mobilize ICE and other law enforcement to intimidate voters in five heavily Latino counties, in addition to sending federal monitors. The State of California mobilized its own monitors to watch the DOJ monitors, but no voter suppression or voter fraud issues were reported.
