With Election Disinformation Again on the Rise, Bipartisan Policy Groups Remind Americans that Elections are Secure, Accurate and Transparent

Chart: United in Security: How Every State Protects Your Vote in 2026

Disinformation claiming rigged elections and widespread illegal voting is on the rise.  A new explainer from three prominent bipartisan policy groups shows how our state procedures, preparation and infrastructure keep our elections secure.

February 2nd, the Bipartisan Policy Center, conservative think tank R-Street, and the Institute for Responsive Politics issued  “United in Security: How Every State Protects Your Vote in 2026.” It reminds Americans that voters must meet federal and state eligibility and ID requirements in order to register and vote, that safeguards are in place to make sure those voters vote only once, and that fines or imprisonment await anyone who doesn’t follow the rules.

Similarly, the groups note that election officials in 49 states conduct regular maintenance on voter registration lists to remove those who have moved, died, or are otherwise no longer eligible.  And 44 states have rules to verify that absentee ballots are returned by the actual voter.

For accuracy, 49 states mandate uniform voting machine testing procedures and audits, with 96% of voting machines use either paper ballots or provide paper tracking.  The voting process is transparent before, during and after election day, and don’t forget our election workers, who make it all happen.
